What Our Heater Repair Service Covers

Every repair visit starts with a thorough inspection to identify the root cause rather than just the symptom. Once our technician knows what’s wrong, we provide upfront pricing and walk you through your options before lifting a wrench. If the system is beyond repair, we offer replacement and installation services and can give you a free estimate on new equipment so you can make a confident, informed decision.

Our scope extends well beyond a single piece of equipment. In addition to furnace repair and forced-air heating systems, we service water heaters, handle plumbing needs like leak detection and tankless water heater installation, install and repair electrical systems including panel upgrades and generator installations, and improve indoor air quality with whole-home humidifiers and air purifiers. One call covers your entire home comfort system.

A few additional features make the process easier:

  • Virtual diagnostics: We can assess your equipment through your phone camera before arriving so the right parts can be ready when we pull into your driveway.
  • Text message updates: You’ll receive a notification and a photo of your technician before they arrive, so you know who is knocking at your door.
  • Filter delivery program: Replacement air filters arrive at your door on a regular schedule, keeping your system running clean between service visits.
  • Clean job sites: Shoe covers go on before we step inside, and we clean up completely before the truck leaves your property.

Why Elkhart Homeowners Choose Great Lakes

Generations of Michiana families have relied on us because a family-owned business with roots in this community since 1957 has real accountability. We can still be here next year to honor warranties and answer questions long after the repair is done. Every employee who enters your home has passed a background check and drug test, and our technicians are trained to explain the problem in plain language and show you the issue directly before any work begins.

  • Same-day appointments: We work to fit you into the schedule the same day you call.
  • 24/7 emergency response: A real person answers when you call at 2 a.m. on a January night, and we can dispatch a technician to restore heat as quickly as possible.
  • Virtual consultations: Discuss the issue or explore replacement options via video call without rearranging your day for an in-home visit.
  • Flexible financing: For larger projects like full system replacements, financing plans let you spread the cost over time rather than draining your savings at once.
  • Community recognition: Beyond the 2025 Community’s Choice Awards, we hold a 10-year Pulse of the City Customer Satisfaction designation and the 2017 ACCA Residential Contractor of the Year award.

For homes that also need cooling work, our AC Installation & Replacement services are handled by the same team under the same standards.

Common Heater Problems in Elkhart, IN

Northern Indiana winters place sustained demand on heating equipment throughout the season. Knowing what to watch for helps you act before a minor issue becomes a full breakdown.

  • Thermostat malfunctions: Inconsistent temperatures or a system that won’t turn on can often trace back to calibration issues or a failing thermostat rather than the furnace itself.
  • Pilot light and ignition problems: A furnace that won’t produce heat despite running is among the more common calls we receive during Indiana’s heating season. Ignition components wear with repeated use.
  • Worn mechanical components: Blower motors, heat exchangers, and limit switches all cycle thousands of times across a heating season. Some can be repaired; others signal that a system is nearing the end of its life.
  • Clogged air filters: A restricted filter forces the system to work harder and can trigger automatic safety shutoffs. Replacing filters on schedule prevents a surprising number of service calls.
  • Unusual noises or frequent cycling: Banging, rattling, or a system that cycles on and off repeatedly are common signals that a component needs professional attention.
  • Unexplained energy bill increases: A sudden spike in heating costs often means the system is working harder than it should, which is worth diagnosing before the problem grows.

Our technicians diagnose heating systems across all of these scenarios. See our full heating repair services for more detail on what we cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Should I Schedule Heater Maintenance?

Annual maintenance before the heating season is the standard recommendation, and scheduling bi-annual checks can help catch additional wear on systems that run hard through a long Indiana winter. Booking before peak season also means you’re less likely to wait for an appointment when demand spikes in December. During a heater maintenance visit, our technicians inspect components, clean the system, and flag anything that looks like it may fail under sustained use.

What Are the Signs My Heater Needs Repair?

Inconsistent heat, unusual noises, strange odors, frequent cycling on and off, a sudden increase in energy bills, and complete loss of heat are all reasons to call. Some of these symptoms point to simple fixes; others indicate a component failure that can worsen with continued use. Don’t wait through a cold snap hoping the problem resolves on its own.

What Should I Do If My Heater Stops Working?

Check your thermostat settings first and confirm the system has power. If those check out and the heat still won’t come on, call us rather than attempting to force-start the equipment. We’re available 24/7 for heating emergencies in Elkhart, IN. A real person answers the phone, and we can dispatch a technician to your home to restore heat as quickly as possible.

Is It Better to Repair or Replace My Heater?

The answer depends on the age of the system, the cost of the repair relative to replacement, the system’s energy efficiency rating, and whether it has a history of recurring failures. Because our technicians are paid hourly rather than on commission, their assessment reflects what the equipment actually needs. If repair makes sense, we’ll tell you. If replacement is the better long-term investment, we can provide a free estimate on new equipment and walk you through financing options so cost doesn’t force the wrong decision.

How Can I Improve My Heater’s Efficiency?

Regular maintenance is the baseline. Beyond that, upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat, sealing duct leaks, and staying current on filter changes all contribute to lower energy costs. Our filter delivery program keeps replacements arriving at your door on schedule. When a system is old enough that efficiency upgrades can’t close the gap, we can assess whether a high-efficiency replacement may pay for itself over time.

  • We are having trouble getting cool air upstairs in our two story home, what can I do to make the upstairs more comfortable?
A comfortable main floor and a warm second floor is a common complaint with central air conditioning systems. This temperature variation is caused by the fact that cool air is heavy. Heavy air requires more effort to move, especially upwards. Your furnace fan has to work much harder to get the air up two stories. Additionally, cool air, unlike warm air, tends to fall, so that once you actually manage to get the air upstairs, it will naturally fall back to the first floor. Don’t despair, there are some things that you can do. Make sure your furnace fan is on the highest possible setting. Most furnaces installed today will have a multi-speed, direct drive fan motor. Have your service contractor check to make sure that the highest speed is being used for air conditioning. If your fan motor has belts and pulleys, check with your contractor about installing a larger pulley. Adjust the balancing on your ductwork to force as much cool air upstairs as possible. If your ductwork is accessible from your basement, and has dampers installed in each of the supply air runs, make sure the dampers for the upper floor are fully open. You can also close any dampers for rooms on the first floor that do not get much use, or are very small. Some examples may be a powder room, formal living or dining room. You should keep the dampers fully open for the kitchen and the main living or family area. If the ductwork is not accessible, or doesn’t have any dampers, don’t despair. You can balance the air flow by opening and closing the dampers in the supply air registers. If you cannot get a register closed, we have been told that covering the register with a telephone book works well. Don’t forget to re-balance the ductwork system when you switch over to heating. During the heating system you want most of the warm air delivered to the first floor, it will rise on its own to the second floor. Use fans to help move cooler air. Placing a large fan at the top of the stairway can help to draw the cooler air up. A ceiling fan installed on the second floor can also be a big improvement. Check the return air grills. Make sure they are clean. Consider installing “High Wall” return air grills on the second floor. High wall return air grills are installed near the ceiling, not near the floor. This enables the furnace to draw the warmest air from the top of the house back into the system. Your service contractor can give you more information and let you know if it is possible to install high wall grills on your system.
