Why Homeowners Choose Our Team for Soft Water Installation

When you invite someone into your home to work on your plumbing, you want a team you can trust. At Great Lakes Heating & Air Conditioning, we have served the South Bend and Michiana communities for decades as a family-owned and operated company. That history matters because it reflects a long record of showing up when our neighbors need help and standing behind the work we do.

Our technicians are factory-trained, which means they receive formal training on the equipment they install and service. Since we handle heating, cooling, plumbing, water heaters, and electrical systems, we understand how a new water softener affects the rest of your home infrastructure. That broader view helps us plan installations that protect your plumbing, support optimal water heater performance, and integrate seamlessly into your existing setup.

We also work to make the process as convenient as possible. Our team offers complimentary proposals, allowing you to understand your options before making a commitment. We offer virtual consultations for those who prefer to start the conversation remotely, and we strive to provide same-day appointments whenever possible, subject to our schedule. Behind the scenes, an award-winning team of technicians and customer service professionals collaborate to ensure a seamless experience from the initial call through installation and follow-up.

Benefits of Water Softener Systems for Michiana Homes

Hard water is more than a minor annoyance. Over time, the minerals in hard water can accumulate inside pipes, around fixtures, and within your water heater. In homes throughout the Michiana area, that buildup can shorten the life of water heaters and appliances, reduce water flow, and leave stubborn stains on sinks, tubs, and showers. These issues can lead to more frequent repairs and higher utility costs, as the equipment works harder to perform the same job.

A well-chosen water softener system can help reduce these problems. Soft water allows soap and detergent to rinse more cleanly, which often means less residue on dishes, glassware, and shower doors. Many homeowners notice that their skin and hair feel different after switching to soft water, because fewer minerals remain on the surface. Inside your plumbing, reduced scale helps keep pipes and fixtures clearer, which supports more consistent water flow.

There can also be long-term value for your equipment. When a water heater or dishwasher does not have to fight layers of mineral deposits, it can typically operate more efficiently. While every home is different, that can translate into fewer service visits and more predictable performance over time. Our experience working in South Bend and nearby communities since 1957 has shown us the significant impact local water conditions can have, which is why we take care to match systems to each home’s specific needs.

Choosing the Right Water Softener System for Your Home

With numerous options available on the market, it can be challenging to determine which system will work best in your home. The right choice depends on several factors, including your water hardness level, the number of people living in your home, your plumbing layout, and your budget. Our goal is to make those decisions easier by explaining your options in clear terms and recommending a system that fits your day-to-day life.

What We Consider When Recommending a System

During our evaluation, we look first at the basics. We consider the location where your main water line enters the house, the available space near your water heater or utility area, and the arrangement of your plumbing. We combine that information with water hardness readings and an estimate of your daily water usage. From there, we can recommend a water softener size and type that will provide reliable soft water without oversizing the equipment.

    Professional to Work With
“My initial contact was for service with Matt. He tried several options before determining the repair cost include costly parts. He suggest talking to Josh regarding costs of a new furnace. Josh provided me several new furnace options and worked with me regarding budget concerns. Both of these men were professional while working with me to make an educational decision regarding the best way to meet my furnace needs now and for the future.”

    Talk About Great Service!
“I recently had my summer checkup of my furnace and air conditioning on September 5th. Clark, the service attendant who arrived at my house, was polite, friendly, and completely explained everything that he was doing. When Clark went outside to check things, he even folded up my gardening hose that I had left on my yard and placed it close to the house. Talk about great service! These service technicians always represent your company in good and unexpected ways. The other thing I want to mention is that back on January 6th, 2006 my original furnace, which was not from Great Lakes, broke down and it was about 8 degrees outside. I called a variety of furnace companies, but the only company that responded and came out to help me almost immediately was Great Lakes Heating and Air Conditioning. They got my furnace working again on one of the coldest days of the year and I have been with them ever since.”

"I am a customer for "life." My heating and air (18 years old) needed replacement along with a cold air duct installed in the finished basement wall. I consulted Great Lakes Heating and AC and received very competitive pricing from (sales representative/Bruce) with excellent communication and follow-up during and after the sale. The two techs (Nathan and Sam) performed all install services in an excellent manner and demonstrated the excellence of the Great Lakes Heating and AC brand. I have confidence in this company
"The differences? When I needed new AC, I got three on-site estimates. One was a glossy car-salesman-like company, another was an old-family folksy company, and then Great Lakes. The glossy guy I disliked, and it was pricey. The folksy guy I liked, but his knowledge was lacking--he thought my old AC concrete pad would work fine, but the Great Lakes guy said you need a new pad, and also he recommended running a new duct from the basement to upstairs so that cooler air there saves stress on the AC system. I have confidence in this company."
