Protecting Your South Bend Home With Preventive Plumbing Care
Plumbing problems rarely start as a dramatic burst pipe. Much more often, they begin as a slow drip under a sink, a small crack in a pipe hidden in a wall, or a water heater that is working harder than it should. Over time, those small issues can lead to stained ceilings, damaged flooring, mold growth, and higher utility bills. Preventive plumbing care gives you the opportunity to catch and address issues early.
Homes in South Bend experience a wide range of weather. Winter freeze and thaw cycles can put added stress on pipes, outside hose bibs, and uninsulated areas. Heavy spring and summer rains can challenge basement drainage and sump pumps. When we maintain your plumbing, we consider how local conditions may impact your system and help you plan accordingly.
Many homeowners come to us after dealing with at least one inconvenient plumbing surprise, such as a clogged main drain, a failed water heater, or a broken sump pump. We work to turn that experience into a starting point for a more proactive approach. With regular maintenance, you gain more control over when work is done, how it is budgeted, and how your home performs through the seasons.
Why Homeowners Trust Our Team for Plumbing Maintenance
Choosing someone to care for your plumbing is essentially about selecting who you want in your home and who you trust to provide you with honest advice. Our family has been operating Great Lakes Heating & Air Conditioning in South Bend and the broader Michiana area since 1957. That kind of continuity means our team has witnessed firsthand how local homes were built, how neighborhoods have evolved, and what tends to cause problems over time.
Our technicians are factory-trained, and we invest in ongoing education to ensure they can work confidently on today’s plumbing systems, water heaters, and related equipment. For you, that means the person in your home is not just there to fix a symptom. They understand how different parts of your plumbing and comfort systems work together, and they can explain their findings in clear, everyday language.
Because we provide heating, cooling, water heater, plumbing, and electrical services, you don't have to juggle multiple companies to keep your home in good shape. When you call us, our team already understands how your systems interact and how work in one area can affect another. We also prioritize convenience with free proposals, virtual consultations when appropriate, same-day appointments when available, and 24/7 emergency services in case of an urgent situation.
Above all, we are a family-owned business that operates on a simple principle. We aim to treat you the way we would want our own families to be treated. That means clear communication, straightforward recommendations, and a focus on long-lasting solutions rather than short-term fixes.
What Our Plumbing Maintenance Visits Include
Many homeowners are unsure what plumbing maintenance actually involves. We design our visits to be thorough, practical, and respectful of your time. The exact steps can vary based on your home’s age, layout, and past issues, but there are several areas we typically review during a routine visit.
During a typical maintenance visit, we often:
- Look for visible signs of leaks or corrosion on reachable plumbing lines, valves, and connections.
- Check faucets, showerheads, and toilets for proper operation, drips, and silent leaks that can waste water.
- Review the condition of your water heater, including age indicators that are visible, its general condition, and any obvious concerns.
- Inspect accessible drains and traps, looking for signs of partial blockage or build-up.
- Examine sump pumps, if present, and nearby discharge areas for signs of strain or improper operation.
- Confirm that the main shut-off valves and other key controls appear to be operable, so you can act quickly in the event of an emergency.

“The price was comparable to other companies in the area. They had my new unit installed within two days.”- Brandi I.
Great lakes is a gem
"Our a/c died a few weeks ago with temps in the 90s. Great lakes came out the same day, Mr. Stoner was professional and gregarious. No one likes to have to pay for a new a/c but he made it a bit easier. The price was comparable to other companies in the area. They had my new unit installed within two days. The gentleman who installed it were on time and worked extremely clean. If we were not already impressed with the impeccable service the lovely gift bag and the lemon cookies were out of this world. Great lakes is a gem and we will be calling for all of our future home needs."- Brandi I. -
“I recently had my summer checkup of my furnace and air conditioning on September 5th. Clark, the service attendant who arrived at my house, was polite, friendly, and completely explained everything that he was doing. When Clark went outside to check things, he even folded up my gardening hose that I had left on my yard and placed it close to the house. Talk about great service! These service technicians always represent your company in good and unexpected ways. The other thing I want to mention is that back on January 6th, 2006 my original furnace, which was not from Great Lakes, broke down and it was about 8 degrees outside. I called a variety of furnace companies, but the only company that responded and came out to help me almost immediately was Great Lakes Heating and Air Conditioning. They got my furnace working again on one of the coldest days of the year and I have been with them ever since.”- James L.

“The differences? When I needed new AC, I got three on-site estimates.”- David M.
I have confidence in this company
"The differences? When I needed new AC, I got three on-site estimates. One was a glossy car-salesman-like company, another was an old-family folksy company, and then Great Lakes. The glossy guy I disliked, and it was pricey. The folksy guy I liked, but his knowledge was lacking--he thought my old AC concrete pad would work fine, but the Great Lakes guy said you need a new pad, and also he recommended running a new duct from the basement to upstairs so that cooler air there saves stress on the AC system. I have confidence in this company."- David M. -
“Personally, I know he does a good job. Our neighbor is VERY satisfied with him! We even had your sign in our yard.”- Virginia S.

“Clark showed up on time and was extremely personable! The two things that stood out the most to me were his professional appearance and in-depth knowledge. This is the exact reason I switched to Great Lakes and I plan to continue using them!”- Zen M.
