At Great Lakes Heating & Air Conditioning, we’ve been keeping families in Elkhart and throughout the Michiana region cool since 1957. We earned first place for HVAC and Electrical services in the 2025 Community’s Choice Awards and maintain a BBB A+ rating. That recognition comes directly from our neighbors, and we don’t take it lightly.

When your system fails during a heat wave, you need a local team that can respond quickly. Why Elkhart Homeowners Choose Great Lakes Heating & Air Conditioning

Several things separate our approach from a typical service call. Our technicians are paid an hourly wage, not a commission on parts sold. That structure matters because it removes any financial reason to recommend a repair or replacement you don’t need. When a simple fix can solve the problem, that’s what you’ll hear from us.

Upfront pricing means you approve the total cost before any work begins, so the final bill matches what you were quoted. For larger projects like full system replacements, flexible financing plans are available so you don’t have to drain savings to restore your comfort. We also offer free proposals on new equipment and second opinions if you want a fresh set of eyes on a previous diagnosis.

Convenience tools set us apart as well:

  • Virtual Diagnostics: A technician can assess your equipment through your phone camera before driving to your home, often identifying the problem and ordering the right part in advance.
  • Same-Day Appointments: When you call with a repair need, we work to fit you in the same day.
  • Technician Arrival Alerts: You’ll receive a text message with your technician’s photo before they arrive, so you know exactly who to expect at your door.
  • Try-Before-You-Buy: A unique option on certain equipment that lets you experience the difference before committing to a purchase.
  • Comprehensive Home Comfort: Beyond cooling, we handle heating, electrical, plumbing, and indoor air quality so you have a single point of contact for your home.

Every technician passes background checks and drug testing before entering a customer’s home. Shoe covers go on before anyone steps through your door, and the workspace is cleaned completely before we leave, including the exterior area around the outdoor unit.

The AC Repair Process at Great Lakes Heating & Air Conditioning

The process starts the moment you reach out. If a virtual consultation makes sense for your situation, a technician can review your equipment through your phone camera right away. This step often pinpoints the issue and lets us order the correct part before we’re even on the road. Same-day scheduling is the goal for every repair request.

When our technician arrives, shoe covers go on first. From there, they perform a thorough diagnosis focused on the root cause rather than surface symptoms. Common issues we address include refrigerant leaks, compressor failures, and frozen evaporator coils. Before any work begins, we walk you through what we found, show you the issue directly, and present the full job price for your approval. You decide before we lift a wrench.

Once the repair is complete, the workspace is cleaned up entirely and the exterior area around the outdoor equipment is left neat. You’ll know the job is done when the space looks better than it did when we arrived.

The Case for Regular AC Maintenance in Elkhart

Annual air conditioning maintenance, ideally scheduled before peak summer heat, can reduce the likelihood of mid-season breakdowns. In northern Indiana, where cooling systems work hard from late spring through early fall, staying ahead of wear makes a real difference. Maintenance visits typically include checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical components, and cleaning coils so small problems don’t turn into urgent repair calls.

Our AC Repair and Maintenance service makes it straightforward to stay on schedule. We also offer a filter delivery program that sends fresh air filters directly to your door with reminders to change them on time, keeping the system running cleanly between professional visits. Consistent upkeep is one of the most practical ways to protect your cooling investment and reduce the need for emergency air conditioning repair in Elkhart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Should I Do if My AC Stops Working Suddenly?

Start with a few basic checks: confirm the thermostat is set correctly, look for a tripped breaker at your electrical panel, and check whether a dirty air filter is restricting airflow. If those steps don’t restore cooling, call us at (574) 498-7556. We’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and a real person will answer. Before the technician arrives, note any unusual noises, odors, or whether ice is visible on the indoor unit. Those details help us diagnose the problem faster.

How Often Should I Schedule AC Maintenance?

We recommend at least one maintenance visit per year, with spring scheduling being ideal so the system is ready before cooling demand peaks. A pre-season inspection can catch worn components, low refrigerant, and dirty coils before they cause a breakdown on the hottest day of the summer. Our filter delivery program helps you stay on top of routine upkeep between professional visits.

What Are Common Signs My AC Needs Repair?

Warm air coming from the vents, unusual noises, foul odors, ice forming on the evaporator coils, frequent cycling on and off, and unexplained increases in your energy bills are all signs worth addressing promptly. Inconsistent temperatures from room to room can also point to an airflow or refrigerant issue. Catching these early can keep the repair simpler and less costly than waiting until the system stops entirely.

How Long Does a Typical AC Repair Take?

Repair time depends on the issue. Many repairs are completed in a few hours during the initial visit, particularly when virtual diagnostics allow us to identify the problem and order parts in advance. More complex repairs, or those requiring specialty parts, may take longer. We communicate openly about expected timelines throughout the process so you’re never left guessing about when your system can be back up and running.

  • We are having trouble getting cool air upstairs in our two story home, what can I do to make the upstairs more comfortable?
A comfortable main floor and a warm second floor is a common complaint with central air conditioning systems. This temperature variation is caused by the fact that cool air is heavy. Heavy air requires more effort to move, especially upwards. Your furnace fan has to work much harder to get the air up two stories. Additionally, cool air, unlike warm air, tends to fall, so that once you actually manage to get the air upstairs, it will naturally fall back to the first floor. Don’t despair, there are some things that you can do. Make sure your furnace fan is on the highest possible setting. Most furnaces installed today will have a multi-speed, direct drive fan motor. Have your service contractor check to make sure that the highest speed is being used for air conditioning. If your fan motor has belts and pulleys, check with your contractor about installing a larger pulley. Adjust the balancing on your ductwork to force as much cool air upstairs as possible. If your ductwork is accessible from your basement, and has dampers installed in each of the supply air runs, make sure the dampers for the upper floor are fully open. You can also close any dampers for rooms on the first floor that do not get much use, or are very small. Some examples may be a powder room, formal living or dining room. You should keep the dampers fully open for the kitchen and the main living or family area. If the ductwork is not accessible, or doesn’t have any dampers, don’t despair. You can balance the air flow by opening and closing the dampers in the supply air registers. If you cannot get a register closed, we have been told that covering the register with a telephone book works well. Don’t forget to re-balance the ductwork system when you switch over to heating. During the heating system you want most of the warm air delivered to the first floor, it will rise on its own to the second floor. Use fans to help move cooler air. Placing a large fan at the top of the stairway can help to draw the cooler air up. A ceiling fan installed on the second floor can also be a big improvement. Check the return air grills. Make sure they are clean. Consider installing “High Wall” return air grills on the second floor. High wall return air grills are installed near the ceiling, not near the floor. This enables the furnace to draw the warmest air from the top of the house back into the system. Your service contractor can give you more information and let you know if it is possible to install high wall grills on your system.
